Sam Ciocys
Physics and mathematics BS, 2015, Honors
Drexel faculty mentor: Dr. Goran Karapetrov
Sam participated in the Maryanoff Scholarship Program his freshman summer. He spent two co-ops in 2013 and 2014 at Argonne National Laboratory working for the University of Chicago’s South Pole Telescope team (SPT). During his first interval at Argonne, he researched superconducting-ferromagnetic thin film hetero-structures for application in transition edge sensors. This experience was transferred to his second appointment at Argonne where he was part of the South Pole Telescope detector fabrication team building detectors to observe the Cosmic Microwave Background.
He has joined the University of California at Berkeley as a physics doctoral student. His interests are in condensed matter physics in topics such as strongly correlated materials and exotic quantum phases. He plans to be active in physics educational outreach, demonstrating the wonders of physics to eager minds.
